Coping with a picky eater or I'd rather say, a child who does not like to try new foods is very similar to how you create a good eater.
- Maintain a regular eating routine/schedule.
- Eat as a family and eat at a designed eating location (avoid eating in front of the TV).
- Serve at least three foods at each meal and at least two for snacks, and make one of them a fruit or vegetable
- Combine a familiar food with a new food
- Trust that your child knows what he needs
- Offer new foods 8 to 15 times before he accepts it readily
- Teach by example; eat a variety of foods so children learn to experiment and accept new foods.
- Allow your child to stay active and exercise during the day to build appetite.
- Pick your battles. Setting limits and deadlines can be tough. Healthy eating skills are first priority in the early years while table manners can follow when child is a bit older.
- Don't force, smile and have fun.
Let's not label our child 'picky-eater', and rather encourage them towards good healthy eating habits.
